Both Oakland entrants received major grants in the Partners in Preservation San Francisco Bay Area Initiative: the Cleveland Cascade ($50,000) and the Oakland Fox Theater ($75,000). In all, 13 of the 25 finalists received major grants. The remaining 12 received $5,000 awards.

The grant recipients largely reflected the popular vote in the contest’s web competition. The 13 grant recipients were composed of the top 12 finishers in the web contest, plus the Fallon Building (San Francisco LGBT Center) (15th place), Tomales Town Hall (22nd place), and Spreckels Temple of Music (Golden Gate Park Bandshell) (24th place). The Outdoor Art Club (5th place) and Lyford House (8th place) did not receive major grants.

The Oakland Fox finished fourth in the web competition. The Cleveland Cascade finished 12th in the competition, after having temporariliy fallen to 13th place earlier in the final day, October 31st. The number-1 winner of the web competition was First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Berkeley.

The organizers always made it clear that the web competition was only one criterion among many that would be used to determine which projects received funding.

The grant announcements were made tonight at an awards ceremony at the Julia Morgan Ballroom of the Merchants Exchange Building in San Francisco.

Amounts of each of the 13 major grants were announced at the event but, as of press time, have not been posted at the Partners In Preservation web site. A total of $1 million was awarded.
