One reason to support Measure N is to make sure that the Kaiser Convention Center stays in public hands. The vultures are circling, and if N opponents want to hang on to this valuable landmark building, they should prepare to help battle against privatization.

In reply to Ms. Schiff on privatization, is it not obvious that if a new main were built at Kaiser Center, the privatization vultures will set their sights on the city block where the current main library is? Since when is an overpriced, ill-advised project at the expense of strapped homeowners the proper response to any privatization threat?

I think one reason the library bond measure may go down the toilet is the general reaction to the DD bond measure debacle. Tax payers are just sick and tired of the City siphoning off money from a good-idea-at-the-ballot box bond measure and DD is a case in point. 1) the East Oakland recreation complex was apparently just a pipe dream and is completely off the table 2) The City is still trying to defend its idiotic plan to cut down trees (and no, the fact that the list is down from 300 to 200 does NOT make me warm and fuzzy inside) 3) All we have to show for the tax dollars collected is paid invoices for consults and some scaffolding (put up a month ago) with NO workers doing any work. 4) The sail boat house restoration funds are being moved around to pay for a restaurant. And this has WHAT to do with "Clean Water and Safe Parks" ??? I could go on, but does anybody out there really think that any of the money is going to trickle down to the Lakeview branch? Not bloody likely. The City assumes that the tax payers don’t know about the bond measure slight-of-hand. Know any Oakland teachers? Ask them if they have seen any of the bond measure money earmarked for their classrooms…and prepare for an earful.
