The League of Women Voters of Oakland is celebrating its 87th birthday in February. We’re celebrating by inviting everyone to join us for a free showing of the award-winning film “Iron Jawed Angels” at the Parkway Speakeasy Theater on Sunday, February 11, at 1:15 PM. The show is part of the Parkway’s Sunday Salon series—a free film followed by discussion.

“Iron Jawed Angels” features an honored cast, including Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, and Patrick Dempsey, and depicts the inspirational true story of two women who stood up for women’s rights and put their lives at risk to help American women earn the right to vote. At a time when many do not exercise that right, it is an homage to those who paid a heavy price, including imprisonment and even death, so that today’s women could vote.

The theater will open at 1:15 PM for refreshments and socializing. There is no admission charge. At 1:45 there will be a pre-film introduction, and the film will begin at 2:00. The Parkway Theater is located at 1834 Park Boulevard [map], near East 18th Street. For more information, call the LWVO office at (510) 834-7640 or visit the Sunday Salon section of the Parkway’s website.

Discussion of health plans for California

Later in February, we invite you to join us for a presentation and discussion on the various health care plans being proposed for California. The meeting will be Thursday, February 22, at 7 PM, at Lake Park Retirement Residence, 1850 Alice Street [map], in the Solarium Room. Truth in advertising requires that I let you know that the League is a supporter of the Single Payer plan being proposed by State Senator Sheila Kuehl. The presentation will include information on all of the plans before the legislature, but will also include advocacy information for the Single Player plan.
